Description
First Then Visual Routine Board
The First Then Board is a simple visual communication tool that helps individuals understand the order of activities.
For many autistic children and individuals with SEN, transitions between activities can feel overwhelming. By showing what needs to happen first and what will happen then, routines become clearer and easier to follow.
This approach is commonly used to introduce tasks followed by preferred activities.
For routines that require showing the current activity and the next step, explore our Now Next Board.
How a First Then Board Works
The board uses a two-step structure:
First → the task or activity that needs to happen
Then → the activity that follows
Example routines might include:
First → Homework
Then → TV
or
First → Brush Teeth
Then → Bedtime Story
This structure can help reduce anxiety and make expectations easier to understand.
